1 commentI’ve Never Been Good With Lessons
Raph has a post up entitled “What are the lessons of MMORPGs today?†As a commenter says, it’s a ‘whats wrong with those damned renderMUDs nowadays’ post, and it comes off as kinda cranky. Or, at least it makes me a little cranky. Witness my crank-fu after the cut.
Revamping SWG Legacy Quests
Speak of the devil, Jeff Freeman got ahold of the folks at Warcry to set them straight about revamping the Star Wars Galaxies legacy quests. The legacy quests are older quests which, in some cases, have been in the game since it was released lo these many moons ago. They’re getting tweaked in order to fit into the more quest-heavy world of post-NGE SWG. From his response:
1 commentNote that a lot of the “fixes” you listed weren’t really fixing anything that was explicitly “broken” – certainly not in terms of broken quest logic as caused this problem: most of them are just tweaks to improve the experience of doing a particular quest. e.g. increasing the number of spawns at a given location, etc. We’ll continue to do that.”ÂÂ
Wake Up Mr. Freeman
Update: He’s back! Mr. Freeman appears to be reposting some of his material from the old blog. I hope he has the opportunity to do new writing as well.
Scott Jennings over at Broken Toys posts about the sad news that Jeff Freeman has taken down his blog. Essentially, idiots in the SWG forums were using his blog posts to beat him and his cohorts over the head about the NGE.
Mr Freeman: I liked the blog, I like the NGE, I’m sorry we won’t be able to catch your ramblings online. Luck to you, sir.
2 commentsLearning From World of Warcraft
Gamasutra’s piece ‘World of Warcraft Teaches the Wrong Things‘, which I posted to Slashdot the other day, has generated a lot of talk amongst the usual suspects. Tobold’s reaction was that he got some things right and some things wrong. Scott Jennings points out the many ways in which the author was pretty clueless. My reaction?
1 commentFriday Machinima Love
Since World of Warcraft’s release, I’ve greatly enjoyed the explosion of Machinima based in Azeroth. While I’ll be realistic and say the majority of the stuff released is utter crap, there are some really great exceptions. XFire and Blizzard have a contest going, with several entries available for viewing. I haven’t watched them all yet, but I can recommend Billy Maclure and The Brothers Tauren as two short (actually funny) comedic pieces. The Crafting Worlds site is home to the ’switcher’ movies. The original movie (”FROST SHOCK!”) is pretty well known already, but I actually like the highly cynical second film even better. Blizzard recently linked to a trio of BWL videos. They’re okay, but the third one is pretty well done. They like, had video editing software and stuff. It shows.
1 commentWoW Hero Class Rumor Mill
It’s what we all want so it’s unlikely it’s true. Just the same, a ‘post from the official Blizzard boards that was immediately deleted’ is walking the internets. Details on Hero classes for the Burning Crusade expansion are the offending information. The post is after the jump.
Given the cool factor, I say the odds are about 1 in 3 that this has any bearing on reality.
Update: 08/2007 – This is a rumour, and has nothing to do with the newly announced Death Knight Hero class as Blizzard has envisioned it. This post is only up here on the site to give you an idea of what people wanted back in the day.
