Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting

Category: Asides, Industry

Acclaim is breaking down another genre wall, going for the first commercial chop-socky MMOG. IGN has some media about the game, called 9Dragons. More info promised at E3, of course. Now all we need is a really good horror MMOG and we’ll have most of our bases covered!

There will never be a good horror MMOG. A horror MMOG may exist, and that MMOG might be a good action MMOG, but it won’t be good horror. Horror is about the unknown. MMOGs are (in part) about talking with others to share information. Walking by two people talking about strategies for defeating Ithaqua kinda kills the experience. Horror also needs to be unusual. Whenever a thousand people are logged into a server, and every one of their characters is involved in some horrific plot, well, it becomes mundane.

Ultimately horror requires that the protagonist be relatively unique is knowing about and facing the horror. By their very nature MMOGs are bad at making PCs unique. An horror MMOG that was good horror would be a terrible MMOG.

Small servers, Alan. Smell like cabbages. :D
