World of World PVP

Category: Asides, WoW

Abalieno has some commentary on the World PVP promised by Blizzard for the upcoming 1.12 patch.

I really didn’t make this up. To conquer a tower you just need to zerg it and sit around. Combat is optional. The main purpose of a PvP system is about giving an occasion to fight. This one *discourages* any attempt to actually have a battle. At least in Alterac Valley you had to fight your way to a tower and then manage to cap it uninterrupted. It opened up at least a possibility for an effective defence.

Pretty much everyone I’ve talked to about this addition has been … dubious of the system’s merits. He goes on to rag on the Silithus system too, which is just as broken. Where is the real world PvP we’ve all been talking to each other about? I saw a great post on Slash under a post about WoW, asking for some kind of geographical control. Another guy wanted the ability to champion a town (a guild or character signing on to defend a specific town). Either way, World PvP should be about ownership. Make the players feel like they’re an actual part of the world, instead of the punch-clocking Naxx-runners they really are.

There are more and more details coming out about the expansion … and yet there are fewer and fewer things I’m looking forward to the expansion having.

They broke world PVP – such as it was, and don’t know how to fix it without disrupting PVE activity. I’m not blaming PVE either, as that is my own preference, it’s just a simple fact. Mass PVP has the potential to alienate PVE-players and that is worrisome to game developers. That said, as a PVE-er, I’ll PVP anyday in a world environment that isn’t scripted. You can keep your BGs; rat in a cage combat for someone who’s a really bored – wanna be killa. And I’m doubting that these staged tower romps are going to entice me anymore than the BGs.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the idea of defending a town! Can we say Southshore and Tarren Mill?? The old days when people attacked the faction cities? If you want PVP let’s make it worth something and let’s persist it for a reasonable period of time. I’m not collecting more crap and turning it into NPCs. Stop staging it and maybe a borderline PVP-player such as myself will engage more readily. I’m not up for trying to grab a single known entity from uber geared players who will show up as you said, just to zerg. Why would I bother? And don’t get me started on these so-called PVPers who spend 99.9% of their time in raids which are PVE content.

Exactly! Say you’re the ‘Hero of Tarren Mill’. When the town comes under attack, you are alerted and have the option of hearthing to the inn as if you were bound there. They could even tie it in with the mobile gaming thing everyone is cheesed about nowadays, and let you get text messages on your cell when your town is in danger.

Show the PvP set some real excitement, and they’ll be all over you like a cheap suit.
