I would especially like to point out the awesomeness of YAMB, which I only recently started listening to as a result of Brent’s coverage of the SOE community summit. For the win. Also, Taverncast has a new site. Nice looking work, guys. Nice work.

Podcasts annoy the holy living crap out of me. Maybe I’ve just never heard a good one. I’d rather just read something. Listening to these things takes too much friggin’ time. When someone rambles on and on in text, I can read through it quickly, scan it for the good stuff. When someone rambles on and on and on in a Podcast, I’m stuck listening to it for however long it takes them to get to the point. And don’t even get me started on the “bad morning radio show” sound effects. Ugh.
Yeah, but you’re really cranky. :)
- “Morning Show Feel”. People love these things, and there’s a good reason for that: you get to know the people. Yeah, they’re there to talk about something, but personality makes a big different. Brent’s VirginWorlds gig wouldn’t be nearly so awesome he hadn’t gotten a really good newscaster voice down. Also, the homesy feel is teh awesomez. Some are better than others, of course. Shows like Yivvits and Mr. Bubble or TavernCast do a great job of incorporating sounds and music into their conversations. Tre-mendous.
- Skipping. You know you can skip stuff if you find it boring, right? There’s a skippy thing on your music player. That’s (part of the reason) most good show break their stuff up into segments. If you don’t care about Topic X, just skip the segment on Topic X.
It’s like radio, but about stuff that doesn’t make me suicidally depressed! Hawesome!
I listen to podcasts exclusively while running. Takes my mind off the tedium and I feel like I’m “getting something done”.
Next-Gen (next-gen.biz) is a particularly good industry podcast. Highly recommended.
I also listen to MOGArmy. Not everyone’s cup of tea as it’s extremely edgy, but quite often hilarious.
Virginworlds I’m on the fence about, as it sprawls across a vast amount of topics without a lot of insight. In other words, he softly tells me stuff I already know without a heck of a lot of value-added. I’m still listening though in hopes that things improve.
Next-Gen *is* good. I usually grab individual episodes that sound interesting. I also tend to listen to ‘casts when I’m at the gym. They’re perfect for ‘getting things done’. I particularly like GDC Radio for that. Very zen. :)
Woot. Glad to see we made your list.
You also should give NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t tell me, some people in our forums suggested it to me and it cracks my ass up everytime.
Hmm, I didn’t realize I talk about stuff that everyone knows already. With 5-6 hours of news collection per week and 4 hours of show prep, I sorta don’t believe that, (unless you’re as insane as I am) but I’m interested in precisely what it is you want more of, convert.c. Shoot me an email to talk more. I’m curious.
Brent, I’ll be happy to chat so long as you know that I wasn’t condemning your podcast at all. I’ll concede that I might be a bit different from the average listener, as I probably fall directly into your category of “insane”. That is, I keeps pretty close tabs on things, essentially out of a mixture of healthy zeal and professional aspiration.
Thus, my personal experience of the show (I’m only speaking for myself, not ‘everyone’) is one I tend to share with many news-oriented venues : it’s just not what I’m looking for, particularly from such a coherent and well-informed voice.
I’ll shoot you an email. BTW, it’s “covert”. :)
