Guild Wars 2 - Too Soon?
bigwig reminded me about the possibility of Guild Wars 2, which reared its head just as I was going offline for a bit last week. If anyone’s interested in posting comments on this God of War Twosday, can I get a headcount of who thinks it’s too soon for a sequel? I’ll admit, it raised me eyebrow when I heard the speculation, and I still don’t know what to think.
Eye of the North/Guild Wars 2 Pros
- New boxes on shelves always get new players into the game. If Eye of the North is on par with the quality level of Nightfall, it’s hard to be sad about an expansion that ‘finishes’ Prophecies.
- Max-level only content is a change from previous boxes, and will snag all the folks who aren’t really interested in re-rolling a new character.
- A sequel could reinvigorate the IP. It hasn’t sounded like they’ve had a problem selling previous boxes, but a new flagship title for the Guild Wars series, on par with the scope of Prophecies and using the lessons they’ve learned from Factions and Nightfall, would be something to see indeed. New opportunities for marketing and fanboi hype, and this time the concept is a proven formula.
- The sequel concept makes more sense for Guild Wars than any other MMOG-type game out there. The standalone nature of each box means that another core campaign ‘fits’ much better than, say, EverQuest 2.
Eye of the North/Guild Wars 2 Cons
- A max-level only expansion is likely to tick some folks off. Several GW players I know enjoy making a new character for each new box.
- A sequel could split their userbase a bit. The hardcore players have already run through all the content in all three campaigns, but I think a lot of Guild Wars’ appeal is that you can jump in without feeling intimidated by all the junk you haven’t done. Two Guild Wars on the market could muddle that.
- It’s a sequel, and there’s something fundamentally jarring about a Massive game getting a sequel. Certainly, it fits with GW’s style better than any other title, but it’s still off putting.
- ‘Too Soon’. Prophecies was only released in 2005, and Nightfall literally just came out; it was released this past October. Going from expansion to expansion to sequel seems like a mighty big leap. Was there something wrong with the current model?
- A graphical upgrade is promised as part of GW 2; if it’s a big enough jump that will leave some current Guild Wars players on the other side of the canyon. There’s the possibility, too, that they’re planning some DX10 goodness. Interesting from a technical standpoint, but likely to split the playerbase even further.
Where do you fit in on this subject? What did I miss for these two lists?

I actually ran a couple of polls about this very item. One was on my blog and another on the MMORPG.com forums. It seemed pretty even across the board. A lot of players are ready for a new one, and the rest don’t seem to care. Not a lot of players were vehemently opposed. The ones who were obviously had something to say.
It’s hard to tell if GW is really going to come out with a #2 too quickly. If they do, I think players won’t mind. I mean, Anet knows what they are doing, and they know what worked in GW. It would all be a matter of making the new fit with the old.
… well those are my opinions at least;)
Great article… love the blog
Thats the question i keep asking, is there something wrong with the current model? Whats the point of the changes? I guess we’ll have to wait for more information.
Well, I’ll give my two cents on the other side of the realm.
What you’ve said is and is not true. There would be cons but making a new character would probably still exist. It simply wouldn’t start at level one. It might start around level 15 or even at the max level for that campaign.
Second, we’re forgetting that although GW has a strong PvE fanbase and a big PvE world(s) it is in fact a pvp game. So although you’re hearing news about ‘continued story’ ‘quests for max level chars’ etc. Let’s not forget that they’ll be adding alot of pvp aspects to the game that might appeal to the pvp side a bit more. This was the direction of the agme during the original beta’s, tehy’ve tried to keep it this direction but unfortunately alot of noobs get turned away from pvp after being wiped by the people playing pvp for the past two years.
One of the things that actually have me worried and yes i know times are changing and we all know GPU’s seem like they need to be updated quite frequently now. One of the great things I liked about Guild Wars was that it actually displayed beautifully on Low to Mid Range Systems. I know for a fact that DX10 WILL split the community up drastically. Yeah I know the graphics have alot of flaws people could pick at all day long but all games do. I think one of the things that made this game great was that very fact. Take Vanguard: Saga of Heroes for instance. My brother plays that game. I hear from him frequently the community is crap because it is small due to lack of people. My point being is that the system requirements for that game compared to what it delivers is NONSENSE. Just my piece of the pie. No need to criticize but it will destroy the community drastically improving the Graphics.
The game will as announced be released in 2009-2010 thats when you thinka bout a little while away so you really don’t have to worry about the release date.
GW2 is only just announced, nobody knows the state of the game.
Optimistically, a beta may be available at the end of the year, which roughly puts the release date in 2009.
I got Vista, so I’m looking forward to a full blown DX10 product :)
GW looks dated already.
Mocax, really? I’d have to respectfully disagree! :)
I loooove the way Guild Wars looks. I’m still paying EQ2, and after over a month and a half in Nektulos, I’m about ready to bash by brains out. The same dull grey sky and forbidding woods (all of which looked really cool the first two or three times I was there) is now really really grating.
Contrast that with zones in Guild Wars; they may not have the shiny tech of EQ2, but they sure look better. (IMHO)
Sorry i may be mistaken but in the article i read, Eye of the north was another Expansion to the first guildwars, but is a TRUE expansion not a standalone, and in order to play that one you had to have one of the other 3 so that you could continue on with a high level character. That was supposed to be coming out the end of 2007 begining 2008.
GW2 however is a new product alltogether, and is supposed to take place 300 - 400 years after the current guildwars. They were playing with the idea of multiple races like Char and Naga and others being playable along with Humans. That game isn’t supposed to be out till 2009-10, but is in the works right now so they don’t really have a complete idea.
Well the thing i want to know is if they will have it that you will be able to transer your characters over from the original guild wars because alot of people work hard to get gold and items in guild wars and it would be a shame if they had to leave it all for the new guild wars. And for what they already said, making better graphics for it might lower the population in guild wars alot because my laptop has crappy graphics but still delivers good graphics for a crappy graphics card. Although the new races might be a good idea to have to play as but i would still like to have my original characters as i have worked hard to get them where they are. Well hope i hope it get better and stuff.
guys it doesnt sounds bad the GW2 but the only thing i dissagree is the no-compatibility stuff and by this i mean that about you being unable to move old campings chars to the new one and is freaky that if u pay a 50$ amount per camping the game will be left aside thats whats messes me up they should fix that and like make some link between the games

guild wars eye of the north and guild wars 2 are going to be different in every way possible. eye of the north is like guild wars is now and is an extension to the tyria continent. guild wars 2 is going to be something different all together. it is going to be similar to games such as lineage and world of warcraft, nothing like the guild wars we know and love. i say stuff guild wars 2, if i wanted that game play i would go WOW, just keep making the guild wars we play now even better!!
No its not too soon, keep in mind that Eye of the North (expansion) and Hard Mode (harder version of every map in the game) plus some minor upgrades will have to hold players nailed to their keyboards for 2 years (from now).
Gw arnt aiming to beat WoW but if GW2 will be as described, largest MMO will be free of charge =)
Hi everyone.
Before I really read the article I am not spewing my toughts about it, but only one atm.
What I find so odd is one thing nothing we have is official… really think about it.
The only thing we know is that inquirer posted a message and it made gw2 sound like a wow clone. I go ok very odd curious but very odd….
Then we get a message from gaile on a couple of fora acknoledging that some gamers have received their pc gamer mag…
But what I find really odd is that there is no advertisement on pc gamer site about the new mag nor their scoop, on no other official site anything is mentioned on the big games sites nothing is mentioned…
ok except wild speculations and one small audio file about the changes that will be made and telling us he’ll make scans to show everyone we have nothing…. cuz well the scans can’t be found…
But ah well we’ll see soon enough I guess… it’s almost the 1st of april
and who knows they might just pop out and say aprils fool…
Greetz
one more thing in my alliance the pc gamer subscribers didn’t receive their issue up to this date…
I for one am enthusiastic about Guild Wars 2. Having played Guild Wars for 21 months now and still having a good time, I’ve always felt like I’m powerless except for my titles against new players who think they’re great. I think its wonderful how guild wars does this, but I think in GW2, my character will have a son 300 years or so down the line with all of my accomplishments, it will make him stand out against the newer players for respect, while still not intimidating them. I don’t want to be able to one hit kill anyone, I just want a little recognition.
That being said, I love the idea of roleplaying my characters, and here are some pros I find with GW2.
1. It wouldn’t make sense for my character to be ported over, unless GW pulled off some immortality b.s. to have my characters alive 300 years later.
2. Starting the game was the most fun part I had playing the game. It would be fun to start over. The great northern wall mission scared the hell out of me! lol :]
3. DirectX10 - people already have full DX10 support and cards. I myself have windows vista running on a later DX9 model, but come 2 years, the price on DX10 cards will drop dramatically. Also, Guild Wars will still run on lower graphics just as it does now, but if you put it at the highest setting we will see better graphics with DX10. It should be similar to the way if you put anti-aliasing on a low model card now the screen becomes blurry. Lower model computers just won’t have the best graphics, but that’s obvious isn’t it? Also, with DX10, we can expect much better skill effects than we do now, such as maelstrom being a huge storm, etc.
4. Races - With the game already having such hostility from race to race in the NPC world, it sure will be interesting to see if the players pick up on that and role play it, or if they will consider it racism and be friends with any other race with no problem.
5. Jumping, swimming and sliding - If they do it right, the computing power and internet bandwidth we will have in the DX10 era will make us fight in real time even more than we do now. Imagine being a monk, and jumping over a sword blade to dodge an attack. Swimming sounds cool as well. Maybe they will make it boost electric power of elementalists, or allow mesmers to use psychic energy to create waves against their opponents? For sliding, I’d have to say I’ve already sorta slid, but it was just lag while I was trying to run away and got knocked down. That being said, imagine being a hammer warrior, and using a knockdown that not only knocks your opponent, but sends them sliding down a hill to their demise.
I could list some others too, but I think you get my point.
One of the guys said there would not be a level limit. i think not because that would only make the game NOT fun,and suck. maby fun for uber gamers (not me), but eventually tire all of us out. it would also make it really NOT fun for casual gamers (me), who play a few times a week, not 24/7. what would happen would be level 1000 uber gamers, taking over all pvp. the level cap should be around 30, making the game fun for all of us, who dont sit in our houses all day and play. SOME OF US HAVE LIVES!!…
I forgot something. they should make cities/outposts not designated.u can just travel there without going through a sheild/weapons talking away “Swirl Thing”, such as nightfall. u should be able to roam free with weapons and sheild in ciies such as WOW, but have your characters in different servers. im not a WOW fan, this is just something to think about.
I, for one, am very excited about both Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2. I WOULD be kind of peeved to not be able to transfer my characters but come on, it’ll be 2 years from now!!! 2 years!! It’ll be time for something new.
The one thing that does bug me a bit right now is the lack of level cap. Cue the level grind.
I think having a no level cap would be the stupedest thing ncsoft has ever done.
I agree with john… Having no cap will result in level X hardcore players dominating pvp, scaring new players away from pvp. Considering GW was meant to be a pvp game, I think level 50 would be a reasonable choice and ncsoft could make it harder to earn xp e.g. giving small amounts of xp for completing missions (I reached level 8 in an hour on Factions). Being able to transfer players from GW1 to GW2 would also be a bad idea because of the time span, but possibly being able to transfer gold, minipets etc from the first game to the second could be a good idea.
I think level cap should be auround 30-40, for those who dont play too much to have a chance in pvp. it should be easier to make xp quiker, get to 30 or 40 fast
I really think GW is going way too fast. It might be going slow for some major gamers, but I’m definitly not. Also, before I was introduced to GW, I played runescape (I know, pathetic) and higher levels were so cruel and think they were almighty to everyone else. It was kind of sad in a way and if GW was ever to make the level up to 100, there would be so much more complaints of people getting called noobs. Also, new levels for characters means EVERTHING WILL BE LEVELED UP!!!!!! Think of a level 150 Varesh that does 20,000 damage with each swing. All the new health is going to be so confusing. GW is the perfect online game at the moment and I’d rather it not be turned into runescape or WoW. The level increase will mean tons more xp hunting and doing missions 50 times over and over just to get leveled up. Theres not enough quests to maintain that kind of level. Its also horrible that we cant carry characters from the 3 campaigns into the sequel. I dont want to leave my old characters (that I’ve spent fortunes on) to go to waste. Might as well delete the other campaigns I say. Theres still so much to do in these campaings and Arena Net needs to give more time to the non- uber gamers (such as myslef).
Though I am incredibly excited over both the expansion Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2 I suppose I have certain reservations like the rest of you.
Yes there will probably be another 2 years before GW2 is fully released but presently I would not want to leave behind the first Guild Wars. My characters, my guild and perhaps simply being comfortable with the original are all reasons that I am slightly worried over the sequel.
Quite frankly it is a tad scary to recollect all the hours we players put into guild wars, and what a sequel would mean to all the effort.
Still aside from that I am utterly psyched about the revamping that GW2 will be getting and all the new features that will be incorporated into it.
And to add to the current vote, I also believe that a level cap should still be enforced. Unlike some other MMOs, Guild Wars has never been about power playing your way to victory. Sure being level 20 in the early ascalon missions makes things a breeze lol, but take a trip down into the Fissure of Woe or a stroll through the Droks run and then strategy plays a far larger roll.
…Personally- I can’t wait. New races are gonna be great…I do worry about the level grinding…I fear for this game I’ve come to love. HOWEVER- ArenaNet has never let us down. I have faith in them…The free roaming has been something I’ve craved for, but…If they DO do such…They need to keep one thing in mind; throughout the games, the players have, in a sense, kept the world running. To make free roaming = a requirement that the players must be able to change the world around them. Perhaps that’s what they plan…I hope so. I do look forward to it, and can guarantee (if I can procure a better comp than what I have, who is upgraded the furthest and BARELY runs my gw’s now) That I will give GW2 a try, and look forward to braving it despite my fears…I just hope I don’t expect TOO much.
It’s that perfect game we MMO fans dream of…Lets hope they don’t take it the wrong way.
I dont know about everyone… but the possible lack of a level cap (or a level cap at 100) is totally ok with me. Maybe they were planning to have decreased point of a high level, maybe just have it as a recognition thing. I know my warrior should be about level 200 now, but no one can see it…. and it drives me nuts.
I dont mind not being able to send over my guys either, Guildwars has actually helped take up some free time (my family usually drives me nuts, i blame my stepbrothers)
Sending titles and achievements however, would be great. Showing off what I’ve done so far and being able to show some people the whats what would be awesome.
and…4 races…what can i say… Im getting tired of tanks: everysingle one looking like some high tech refrigerator. Female elementalists: they look like they came from somewhere warm…even in the middle of the shiverpeaks. Anyways…point is…with how many people play guildwars we all start to look the same, and 4 new races would totally solve that.
I dont think this will go wrong, ANet hasnt really screwed up yet (cept factions…shiro was a wuss)
on the issue of different races, will different races experiences the game differently?
I don’t actually think that a level 100 character will be a bad idea. On PvP, ANet can just create different ranged arenas. For example, characters ranging from level 0 to 10 play in one arena, then 11 to 20 can play in another arena, and so on. On the PvE side, it would be up to the users to have low level players tagging along in the group (helping them level up).
Also, I would like to point out that Ice got the idea in regards to “jumping, swimming and sliding.” I know I will probably get bashed, but It would be tremendous to play/watch GW2 with characters that could perform a 10 hit string ala King from Tekken - (as a skill, please! No memorizing/tapping the joystick) - and NO, I am not trying to turn GW2 into a Final Fantasy style game, just saying it would be graphically impressive. Just think of it as an eye candy reward for a good strategic choice of skills against a particular boss/monster/NPC.
Finally, I do agree that migrating characters from GW1 to GW2 would be unappealing, as creating a brand new character is part of the fun. However, I did (as most of us) invest a considerable amount of time; and my equipment, elite skills, and titles should matter (yes, I like to show off).
Maybe, ANet could allow for the selection of GW1 characters to be turned into spirits that float above your character (like those mini pets, but in the sense of a ancestor watching over you) and they would in turn carry all of your titles.
I hope ANet will come out with a proper idea on how to solve this problem.
In GW2 they should really improve necromancers minions. in the original 3 guild wars necros minions were sooo gay, and lame. htey lokked like bugs coming out of the ground, and died in an instant. instead of animating Bone Horrors, by the way which looked like freaking bugs, you should be able to animate Undead Giants, that annialate all. in the guild wars 2 im expecting better minions.
Oh, bite me.
Its not too soon, its amazing they can keep ‘em comin to keep players interested in the amazing gameplay.
It would rock if they upgraded the graphics. I am not too knowledgeable in that area, but i’m guessing they couldn’t make it able to run on both vista and XP…
I know i have the CPU requirements (2.8ghz p4), but i am not so sure on the GPU.(nvidia geForce fx5600) Coyuld anyone help me out with that?
If they do use the Dx10, i guess i will have to get vista (moan!)
(p.s. my GW name is the one is used above, and my email is: warrior_monk721@yahoo dot com)
I think a higher level cap will be fine, although the whole “noob” calling would get annoying, but it’s annoying already so what the heck. I’m sure it’ll be great but damn, it better STAY FREE! I’m not dishing out a monthly payment for a computer game, no matter how good it is, it’s like renting a video game from blockbuster for a few years and never actually just buying your own copy, 4 or 5 years down the road Guild Wars 3 comes out and then it’s like “well what the hell did I just spend all that money for, really?” To be honest it’s pretty lame.
F2P is the reason I play GW, also, the non-grinding skill based aspect is what keeps me playing. So long as they keep these aspects for GW2, you can be sure I’ll pick up a copy.
I don’t care of the idea of transfering charecters from gw1 to gw2, but i did spend ALOT of time to get my ranger where he is (beat all 3 campains) and has a full set of luxon 15k armour w/some titles (I like to show off too). I mean I like making new charecters and fool around with them, but looking on another side you will be called a “noob” for alot longer, in gw1 u get called a noob but then u think “well only 15 lvls to go” but with the 100 lvl cap u get called a “noob” and u think “aww man i still hav 95 lvls to go I’m nowhere near the highest lvl” and thats gonna suck. And the exploring title is alot easier to get i mean quests take u all over the place and there needs to be anough quests to get u to lvl 100 and tyria isn’t going to grow all of a suden. F.Y.I i used a lvl 100 cap but they might not use that in the actual game just a example BUT THERE IS A CAP they havn’t anounce it yet. ( I don’t know how true that is i heard it from another website)
I don’t know about the rest of you, but i personally love the idea of having a high lvl cap, because, i mean logically, there can’t be no level cap, because u can only put so many attribute points into stuff right? Anyway, my brothere plays wow, and if they implement some of the things that wow has to protect lower lvl charecters, it will be fine. For example, Send in a Ghostly hero of a certain level with a group who has tougher enemies. Also if they could increase movement stuff, like swimming, jumping, sliding, rolling ( evading attacks), it would be a major improvement, and it would give people a bit more WoW than what they have now, but not to much. ost of all the 1 improvement i want to see done is larger scale pvp batttles, trust me on this one guys, I have watched 80 man battles in WoW,( 40 per side) and it is awsome!!! It takes gaming to a whole new level, just because of their being more people. Even i u gave each side like 12 or 13 npc’s that would help out, being the same on both sides ( same professions so its fair) then it would be alot more fun. Also , find another use for balthazar’s faction, or even add faction for the other gods that gives u stuff. I’m just throwing out ideas here, but I think Guild Wars 2 could really be revolutionary, if it has what it takes, o and abotu the graphics, in 2 years, the computers will be cheaper and better for what is needed, so I don’t think an upgrade is needed. Just some ideas…
I am looking forward to eye of the north. I have prophecies, factions, and night fall and have been playing gw since 05. Although i enjoy gw tremendously i have been leaving it for wow as of late. the main problem for me is the same that i have seen from others. that is that i have played so much and have so many hours, i wish i had more than a lvl 20 character and some 15k and titles to show for it. I love wow because there is so much content and reward for both pvp and pve. If gw2 can pull of a mix of wow and the first three campaigns of gw, which is what gw2 is sounding like, i think that it will blow away the market. I think they should implement a much higher level cap, and have weapons and armor that accentuate the disparity between low lvl’s and the high’s. I think this can all work in harmony as long as anet takes the proper steps to protect low lvl characters. I mean in wow you have a choice of joinnig a pvp, pve, or rpg only server. That way you decide if you want high lvl’s pwning u or not. My point is that they give u a choice. If anet can incorporate this type of protection for low lvl cahracters, maintain the balanced pvp system already in place, and still increase content lvl cap, races, armor and weapons, I think it will be the best mmo on the marked hands down.
I heard that they were making 2 campeigns a year because they weren’t charging any monthly fees for it, so they needed some way of maintaining the server costs, etc.
Listen, GW 2 is coming out for beta in mid-2008, for now you have nothing to worry out because the game will be released in 2009-2010, thats 2 years.
I say to hell with GW expansions and just wait for GW 2 so we can all start over fresh and with no gay level cap and have the freedom of accomplishing higher levels if you choose to.
That’s my input..
Long have gone the days when Games were about the Player Base Fun an Adventure, Lo and Behold the New Day of Companies barely listening to people in the gaming community and thinking it’s just about ALL graphics, If a Game doesn’t have the Content I couldn’t care if it has graphics that make the 7 wonders of the world look pixilated. It’s about the CONTENT not the Graphics, Stop Messing what ain’t broken Gaming companies and START to Listen to the Gaming Community!
On an Added note, Guild Wars in this Time has the potential to become as Massive as the Original Everquest did for it’s time, it has the quality in the content without the grind, but at the same time not as “I can reach the highest lvl with my eyes closed” easy as Wow. It has a healthy Balance.
Learn from the Past:
Guild Wars
Potenial - Guild Wars: Graphics ain’t tops but it has Quality in Content
Mistake - Everquest whent from Content to Focusing mainly on Graphics in EQ2 Losing Majority of it’s Player base and Content.
Wow
Potenial - Can’t think of much apart from some good scripts and content
Mistake - Making it so easy that nothing feels like a challenge which makes you feel like you’ve never actually earned anything cause EVERYONE can get it easly in the next week which is a waste of time and doesn’t draw you into the game.
I could go on but this isn’t flame thread.
I found this information on the guild wars website “when Guild Wars 2 arrives, each of these monuments will correspond to special features your Guild Wars 2 characters can “inherit” from your own legendary past, giving you access to exclusive titles, companions (Heroes and pets), weapons, attire, and miniatures. These inherited items are unique: there is no other way within Guild Wars 2 to acquire them.” I dont see why heroes and pets should come… if your dead, why are they not?
I dont think graphics are too important either but in 2 years we will all have new pc’s and graphics cards so what they are planning to set as the specifications will probably be of an average level for the time.
I agree with mike. The lvl 20 cap is too much for me. I understand why they did it. but i think there are other ways to balance a game than just cutting ppl off at 20 making all the armor and weapons pretty much the same (as far as stats go) and then making you only use ur skills. dont get me wrong, I agree that GW takes a bit more skill to play than wow because the nature of the 8skill system gw has. But i think in trying to make the pvp so balanced, gw has scared away a large group of other people who really enjoy pve and the occasional pvp. Thats why i think gw2 has alot to offer. Its hard to go back and play with my necro or my monk after being on wow bc i feel like im glued to the freakin ground. I wanna move around and even jump off a cliff and swim around if i want. Gw with its lvl cap, very linear gameplay and over instanced world have left this gamer feeling restricted and unable to appreciate fully the beautiful environment and content that gw has to offer. wow is proof that you dont need good graphics to have a successful game. I can only imagine what gw2 could do with better content and better graphics… until then ill clean house on the gw char’s i got left so i will be heavily rewarded in gw 2, oh and of course play wow too :)
Ugh, guys- No. Let me tell you…If this is just turning out to be a competition to MATCH WoW, then they need just SCRAP IT! Yeah, I said scrap it. I think WoW is rather…stupid, but, hey- I’ve never played, ya know? (I’m poor, and it takes me a while to get GW campaigns…I can’t afford monthlys.) GW’s is by far the game that stands out from other mmos…Why can’t they keep that the same? To match others is to step down from what is important- their unique way that draws people in. GW IS meant for more intelligent gameplay,( while players rarely show it…)Level grinding in the other mmo’s just isn’t something I see as intelligent work. Yeah, you people’re prolly like,”Psh, who cares about intelligent gameplay?” The storylines pulled me in- yeah I’d love if they’d make player events to alter the world from time to time, but…With the stories, you feel your characters are actually in it; not so with most…Most, your not a hero, but a random soldier. The skill sys is…Revolutionary, a challenge. So, with that, I’m done, for now…Ran outta steam. ^_-
Personally I wouldn’t mind a “free” kill, free roam” system, as long as it incorperated a punishment for killing people, free roaming can be neat, but keep the warp points, maybe charge like 1k to open the portal in the town for your use, and some instanced areas would be nice, missions, dungeons, the like.
The level cap has me so worried though, I love that I can play for a few days and be physically as strong as I can be, the game then isn’t “I have no life so I can kill you” it is “I out smarted you, put the skills to gather, and thus killed you”.
KEEP PVP ONLY CHARS, have the max lvl be 50, give something to the guys who want to RP a lot, pvp only for those casual killers who want to go bash heads, also I hope they keep the death penalty like it is, it’s so much fun not having to worry that if you die you’ll lose all your stuff. and having larger fights would be AWSOME like maybe 32 on 32, random groupings of teams of 8 or something like that. Flashier skills would be well welcomed as well, I mean fire rain is more like a fire drizzle, and meteor shower is just explosions on the ground. Raise the skill cap to 10 maybe?
As for graphics, I’m not worried, if you haven’t updated your computer in 2 years, you deserve to be left in the dust.
The new races will be well welcomed and accepted, if skills are similar I hope you can start out with them being “unlocked” for said pvp only chars.
but I am estatic for the new games, and having 2 years of this guild wars is a lot of time, plenty to unlock all that you can for the game to come.
AND F2P IS THE MOST KICK !@# PART OF THIS GAME.
also try to get some of this to Anet either by contacting or something, make your voices heard!!!
They should have a series of polls, just to get our input.
phew that’s my input on this, flame, add, spam me, if you’d like to talk in game or e-mail me, in game i got by Zoke Deathcaster, and my e-mail is olbladele@gmail.com
Some good points were made previously however I would like to point out some things.
First, the developers are still going to support the Guild Wars 1 world with updates and events so that players can remain in Guild Wars 1 without feeling pressured into moving to Guild Wars 2 if their system isnt powerful enough or they just arent ready to move on.
Secondly, I firmly believe that it IS to early to release GWEN (Guild Wars: Eye Of The North) in the end 07′ season because the majority of players havent completed all of the first 3 games and us gamers are going to have a much longer wait than were used to from GWEN to Guild Wars 2. ANET needs to take their time releasing GWEN because its the last installment in the GW1 gaming experience. For those staying behind in GW1 a new expansion would need to last a while or the developers will see a lot of their GW1 fanbase switching to other MMO’S due to lack of system power(to move to GW2) and boredom with no new Guild Wars 1 campaigns coming out.
As for the higher level cap; I think it’s an amazing idea. Simply put-I got very bored very quickly when I reached level 20 and couldnt go any farther. Especially with the campaigns released there was no point in carrying on with the series. A higher level cap will give players more time to develop their carachters and will allow a closer bonding with characters. Previously I would get to level 20 then just stop playing my character. It seemed as if my skills were like my cards in a poker game- find the best combination to win. I want to win through raw power and experience not who has the best skills.
I especially love the idea of new races thought I think they could have found a better race than Charr. That was one of the major problems I found with GW; I’d think O.K. this is a fantasy game and the only characters I can make is a human…how unoriginal. I see(and put up with) those everyday where’s the fantasy? Good choice in new races.
Overall very exciting since I was losing the desire to play GW. If the developers do this right-it could secure GW a spot in the MMO future-if not a lot of people will stop playing including myself.
All true.
I feel that its all exciting-like a quarret of larks.
I agree with everything that Tyler said except for one thing: While I do agree that I want experience, gear, and raw power to put me on top, I don’t want that to be the only thing. I would like it to be 50/50 split between exp, armor/gear, and skills. This way a lvl 50 could beat a lvl 10 if even if his skills weren’t executed well but he couldnt beat a lvl 45 without proper armor and skills. Gw 1 has develoed a great balance that allows players to be creative and have a fighting chance, but they can still keep that while adding higher levels, highlevel gear, etc. Besides even if Gw2 is drastically different (which I doubt it will be) Its not like you have to play it. Just stick with gw1 and pvp all day. I just think that adding more pve and giving players more incentives in the ways of power through high levels and high end gear will be very rewarding. Another cool thing to do would be to make people able to unlock high end gear by raiding/pve etc.. but also allow pvp to unlock pvp specific armor that is also highend stuff.
Also, the addition of new races is a big plus. I assume that some of the races will be pit against each other, and if t his is the case it would allow for a whole other form of constant pvp that fits right along with pve. There should still be arena games and guild battles, but I think that people should be given the option to engage in pvp with with the opposing races or not while playing the game. This way they will not get ganked by some highlevel. All you do is make it so that friendlies cant kill each other and so that opposing races can choose or toggle their pvp with the other races on or off.
As for the transporting characters I could care less. I have spent ALOT of money on armor, and good gear, have multiple 15k sets on multiple characters, have hundreds of thousands of plat and sill could care less. Why? because one, they are not destroying gw1, and 2 gw2 will have better armor and gear than we can imagine. It wouldnt make sense to have all our old stuff. The new stuff will be better and make the stuff we use in gw1 obselete if we had it in gw2.
Here is an idea, I hope it satisfies every one, have the “max level” be around 50-70, sounds really high and it is, but it would be nice to get to do more with your character, have to put some effort into being strong, At the same time after 50 or so have health, attribute points, and the like stop gaining, but allow for titles, unlockable areas, Cool armer or weapon mods, (glows, auras, Flames, Skins, ect, ect) things that reward higher levels, without allowing you to become a god, roaming the PvP arenas, Because if you get to powerful, and there is no challenge, then you’ll be stuck. (watch the WoW South Park for a hilarious example of this). Also I’m pretty sure there will be no pvp only characters, all we can do is wait for more to be released, and speculate on what we would like to see in this game.
Also technicaly this current game has not “level cap” it’s just not recorded, and you do not benifet besides gaining skill points to invest in skills.
I just don’t want to have to play for 3 years to be able to join in the PvP fun.
All in all after reading what has been released, I am overly optimistic.
i just got all 3 guild wars 2 months ago. I spwnd about $200 on it.
Can i upload my charecter from guild wars to guild wars 2? or did i just wasted 200bucks??
As of now, you cannot transfer Guild Wars 1 characters to Guild Wars 2. However, if you enjoy the games i wouldnt say that you wasted your money especially since Guild Wars 2 is at least 2 years away.
There is talk of your player in this account being bumped up to the power of charecters in guild wars 2, and alowed to play in the PvP realms, which being in the mist would make perfect since to the games storylines, when you die, your soul goes to the mists, so if pvp is in the mists, why shouldn’t your deceased previous charecters be allowed to participate?
It is just talk thought…
Honestly though if there is going to be new races, why keep your lame old humans anyways, your going to want to start over as a newer more exciting race.
I’m still more worried about the level cap being changed to something way to high.
I like that your going to make GW 2 with new graphics, but how come you’re not making the lvls go up to 30 or 40 so that if we finish the game we can still train up on our lvl.
@Jake: Dude, who’s “You” this isn’t an Anet site, from what I gathered, and I agree with the graphics, and the level range you have is a fair range, maybe 45.
Also an auction system would be awsome, just post an item with a minimum bid, and pay 50 gold or so for each day/half day it’s on auction, allow every area (Europe, U.S., ect) to be able to bid on it. Any one else want something like that in GW2?
@Jake: who is “you” this isn’t an ANet Webpage from what I’ve gathered, I agree with the graphics, and 30-45 or so would be a fair and resonable level range.
What I hope they have in it is an auction system.
Be able to set a Minimum Bid and go from there or just have one flat fee, maybe pay a small fee to put it in the auction. Or a one time fee.
Also, having a persistant alliance battle, teams can form and go out into a large rectangle swath of the map, and fight in a huge arena, ballance it so not to maney on one team can join, perhaps allow for up to 1.2 to 1 ratio of players, or add NPCs until more humans join a certain side. But no more capping crap, I want to just bash Heads, while not neading a profesional GvG team to get the Action.
i was actualy pretty excited to hear this news. im not fan of guild wars cause im big WoW fan, not anymore though, but I started to play WoW cause of the way it looked, GW has much more soloing in it, and I mean that you dont have to look group for hours but you can make your own group and thats the reason why I loved GW, especialy Nightfall (paragon FTW :D)
and now when they are making GW2 im deffinetly going to buy it, IF it remains free-to-play, and I think that many other players will buy it just because of that.
of the new classes they will bring im most excited to play is that shaman/druid cause ive read that they can turn into werebear! i mean how cool is that!!!
only thing i hope that they would do to the graphics is that they would make it little bit… unrealistic(?) and NO I dont mean that they need to go to WoW styled cartoon style, but little bit, only thing i hated about the characters were the feet.. they were so.. tiny and ugly!
and maybe one thing that they could change is the running animations from stiff into more loose.
I think that the overall look of GW series is good compared to other new games like Gears of War (I know crappy example) and yes GW does look better someplaces than WoW and now cause GW has been around couple of years it has build nice fan base to it self and and the background story of it has begun better, just like WoW had when it hit the selves.
overall I myself hope that GW2 will be huge succes and that it will be in stores as soon as possible (beta is scheduled earliest in 2008, i think), I cant wait to play with shaman/druid :D
algnosis thats a good idea of letting pvp characters a chance of unlocking armor but it can’t be stronger but it can be better looking(its pvp its supposed to be the strongest already) like for example get x amount of balthazar faction and u get 1 peice of what would be 15k armor and if u get x amount of luxon faction they get 1 peice of what would be luxon 15k armour and the same with kurzick. if they still use those faction ^_^ i think it would be a good addition to pvp
I think that the auction system would be nice I know that the main way I make my money is through market surfing and that requires a LOT of repeated messaging. In fact, my Guild and Alliance used the auction system for a while-that way we could play Missions and stuff and still sell our items.
As for the graphics I believe that GW is still the best for an MMO (the key with the MMO is that the developers really need to be careful on how powerful the user’s computer needs to be to run the program successfuly)however, I play a lot of games that have crappy graphics but are still fun to play (like Final Fantasy Tactics or Golden Sun). We all know that Blizzard has the power to create an amazingly-detailed game but the reason they dont is that WoW has a cartoonish style and of course, so that more players can run the game on their systems. The one thing that I can’t stand about GW1 is the point-and-click system (thank GOD their changing it)I really don’t feel as if my character is part of the beautiful environment that they set up.
All-in-all very promising perspectives.
I love the idea of a Global auction system especially since I make most of my money through market surfing(which requires a LOT of continual messaging). Actually, my Guild and Alliance used the auction system for a while since it allowed us to continue playing the game while we sold our items.
As for graphics, i’d say that GW is at the head of the MMO departnment. However, Blizzard has the potential to create a dynamic MMO with superior graphics but they refrain from doing so in order to retain their cartoonish style and allow thier fans a game style that is compatible with almost any decent system.
I am especially glad that there are plans to fix the point-and-click style of gameplay. Most of the time I feel very detched from the beautiful scenery the GW producers set up.
All-In-All there are some very exciting prospects.
Alright heres something to realy look forward to, the prospect of absolutley epic PvP battles, like the Mist fights being open ended (come and go, not tied to an indevidual match) That could have on up to 8 teams of i don’t know 10 or so on each side, fighting over 5 or so res shrines and 15 other bases, just huge fights. With good enough servers there would be very little lag.
And alliance battles could be the same, have fights like the one above only taking place in several citys all over the map, and other places, (way points or somin like that) Just epic fights would blow my mind!!!
On a different note, the pets and “Heros” won’t count towards your party max. So in alliance match, lets say you can bring 2-4 of them without your stats suffering to much. so 100 people one each side * 4 pets per, that’s 500 bodies on the map per side… Maybe a little to epic? But with several servers handling the fighting, it shouldn’t be to much of a problem.
Any one else like the idea of bigger fights?
i for one am total excited about gw2 mostly. i mean the expansion is nice and all, but its not really anything new to be really overwhelming excited about… gw 2 on the othe hand… now theres a whole load of new stuff and after readign some of the other articles about wat new features it will have im already excited and cant wait till it comes out in 2 years… and omg i heard that theres no lv limit.. wowz its just like wow only its better and PHREE!!! i hope anywayz… well i give congratz to anet fora job well done u really out did ur selves this time
phreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee i hope cuz im not entirely sure u may nvr noe if they decide to charge a monthly fee to play online..
Jeremy, your a litte !#@$ head, GW isn’t supposed to be anything like WoW if it is i will prompty burn it and go back to the other, i don’t want to have a level grinding game, i can get those free to download and play, and there still better than WoW.
WoW is for lifeless people who have never had a girlfreind. I’m sry WoW fans. actualy i’m not
Zoke, u dont have to be such a #@$!&@ hard ass to me… and u probably misunderstood when i said “its like wow only better” bc i didnt mean that they were the same..i noe that gw is supposed to be diff than wow… bc the unique style of gw is wat pulled me into the game… cuz i mean if gw was just another kill the crap out of everyone then yea i would burn it too.. but its not im just saying theres quite a few similarities between the 2 like the fact that there might not be a lv cap… god
u noe wat would be cool in gw 2… if they could show the tanks using their sheilds to actually block an attck… i mean that would be awesome and maybe even the possibility for a group of eles to combine their attacks to create one huge ass fireball… well these are just wat i would think would be cool on gw 2
Ok most of you on here are retards. 500v500? ok so maybe the servers could handle it if they had super-servers all running together but think about the poor guys like me with shitty computers , 2.8ghz cpu 512 256 of RAM and a half decent graphics card. Imagine trying to conect to 99 other clients and oconstaly streaming where they are and what there doing to your pc and also… the rendering of the spells? thats 500 bodys doing individual actions that cant be pre-renderd that would screw me over completly instant black screen. A level cap system would screw the whole point of GW over, GW is about tactical thinking, teamwork to spike and render there monk useless and just generally being more intelligent than your oppoent. WoW sucks your soul in and shits i out to the devil because of its high level cap and ridiculous weapons and armour system. Also if they make the game 300-400 years down the line they better not introduce guns, i dont like my fantasy RPG’s to include a SMG.
@jeremy, my apologies. I just don’t want a nother level grinding game.
And i agree that having the tanks actualy use their sheilds would be hella bad !@#, like maybe a 25 % block rate or somin useful rather than a little bit of armor. or even just an animation.
Whats Ma Name,
1. It was a dream, not going to happen, not 500 at one place at one time either. is a 100 more resonable to you? maybe even just 50, in a large arena, fairly spread out, and that was 500 spread out over the whole of the alliance battle area, not all in one city.
2. That shity comp won’t even be able to play the game, it’s going to be bumped up for a computer 2 years from now. 256 meg Ram is barley enough to play GW1, and 300 years from 400. BC is before gun powder, it will still be swords and stuff.
3.I AGREE SO MUCH ABOUT WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT WoW. and the level cap.
I like the lvl cap where its at now, if it gets to big theres gonna be alot more healling for the monks to do, and lvl 20 is good because u have to use ur brain alittle, its about skill not wat lvl u are(though lvl can be helpful), i saw a lvl 14 take on a lvl 20 before and win. Skill played alot in factons because that was alot more different pvp fights to do, go for the luxons and fight in fort aspenwood or ab or do the same with the kurzick ohh ya jade quary, then nightfall came out and hero battles were made. The lvl cap is good but if u want to show that u could be lvl 200 by now go out and get all the skills from skill trainers and say u almost hav all the ranger skills(or watever proffesion u are) or get some of the 15k armor that says u did alot. the lvl cap is fine to me>
I agree with u simon… if the lv cap is to high then it will be just another kill the crap out of lv lower than u.. but maybe they can raise the lv cap to maybe 70 or so that way it doesnt get boring real fast because then all the quests and stuff will seem meaningless…
a thought just occured… i hope that they will be able to use skill points for somthing else rather than using them to buys skills cuz i have like 100 skill points that im not even goin to use lol…
Awesome someone agrees with me :)
Okay folks. We’ve gotten into name calling now. Conversation is now closed. Thanks to everyone that participated!
