Guild Wars 2 – Confirmed and Explained

Category: Guild Wars, Reblog

Via CVG, a post on the PC Gamer forums talking about the rebirth of Guild Wars and ‘the end of Guild Wars campaigns’. There’s a lot of the same thoughts as responses to this post that we’ve seen here and on other sites. I’m still saddened by the idea of the end of GW campaigns; it was such a great idea. On the upside, lots and lots of new info on the sequel with a lot of interesting ideas put forth.

Predominately open worlds, with instancing as a secondary feature in some areas (not positive on the interpretation). Hundreds of people in the same area, and choices that the population as a whole change the quest structure. PCG gave an example of choosing to rally against a dragon or not. Those that help, gain loot and xp. If the dragon isnt driven away, another ‘quest’ may trigger, leaving more options for the population. Very cool idea IMO.

There will be no option to migrate characters from Guild Wars 1 to Guild Wars 2. But you will be able to carry achievements forward through a Hall of Monuments. These are built via quests in Eye of the North and is only available in this chapter.

I’d assume that GW will stay up and running even after the sequel goes live; assuming they bundle everything together and offer them on the cheap Guild Wars could become even MORE popular. If the purchase price is low enough, it’d be able to go head to head with RuneScape. No subscription fee and beautiful graphics + low purchase price == win.

I despise MMO sequel, but do at least ONE thing: change the name.

I would agree, I think the concept of ’sequels’ for MMOGs is generally a bad idea.

What do you mean, though, when you say ‘Change the name’? You don’t think Guild Wars is descriptive enough? :)

What!? Deer Sir! How dare thy mention witchcraft of RuneScape!

No really, game that uses poorest graphics possible and costs 5$ a month to play will cost more then Prophecies after 4-5 months of membership. Unless off course you stay on f2p and die painful death of utter boredom.

I’m actually happy to see the campaigns go. They were just too similar to each other, even when they tried to reinvent guild wars (the changes were superficial each time around) in each campaign. A more open world definetly sounds like the right approach as well.

The campaigns weren’t completely different they brought new pvp styles like factions did with the alliance battles and nightfall with hero battles and overall its a new world.
