So a couple things spring to mind:
- Making an event out of deleting expired-account structures is a very good idea. If they could apply that kind of lateral thinking to other new content in the game, that’d be something to talk about.
- I’m gonna get me some Xeno furniture!
- The obvious reason to do this is to clear out the worlds a bit in anticipation of a server merge. Player housing is (I imagine) one of the stickiest wickets to tackle when it comes to considering bringing SWG player together. Do you just back everyone’s stuff up and start fresh? Do you try to keep everything in the same place? What about structures that overlap? Who has precedence? There’s a cap to the number of player cities on a given planet; how do you decide which cities stay and which are deleted?
I really hope this is the prelude to a merge, however they do it. I’ve been wanting an excuse to jump back in for a few months, and having people to play with again would be a really great reason to do it.
update: I hopped on to poke around a bit and (sigh) didn’t see a single person. As usual. What I did see was that houses are already labeled with the (Abandoned) flag, so you can know for certain whether your house is slated for demolition. I took a walk around my neighborhood outside of Theed to get a sense of how much damage I’ll be able to do in a few months, and I stopped counting after fifty or so. Assuming I move quickly on the first day the event starts running, I should be able to catch that 100-buildings-destroyed badge no problem.

Letting players blow up the abandonned housing is cute. It would be even more fun if it let them loot the buildings first. Free Wookie hair sofa! Score!
Wow… SOE does something remotely interesting. Problem is, it is a bit late. Urban Sprawl was an issue questioned in late beta, and it didn’t take but a month after release for Tatooine (and other hotspots) to become wall to wall. Even with high populations, you RARELY ever saw your neighbor. Can’t imagine it now!
I like the idea to make it a community activity. Let’s just hope there is no bugs or it may just be the final nail in the coffin.
The idea I had for SWG server mergers back in the day was to give each server a set of planets. When the servers merged all the houses on the identified planet would be kept for that server. Then just offer an easy way to move your home to the new planet. It will be messy no matter what they do.
What this really made me think of was IDOC camping in Ultima Online… the good ole’ days :P
They probably wouldn’t merge 2 planets together. There are too many issues involved. They would probably create new servers, and migrate characters from two or more servers to the new server. Then there would be a huge land grab. First come, first serve for all.
This way, you don’t have people from one server dumped onto another and forced to find a home amongst the existing cities.
Actually, with the current population, and current hardware, they could probably support all of SWG on one “server”.
Heck, I would dump everyone onto the one server, and open up another clean server with no transfers. Have everyone start out as noobs.
The merge of SWG servers would be great. I would say since this thread started, players have dropped even farther. I can travel across cities and not see anyone sometimes.
The land grab would be a bad idea. First off, you have a noob and a veteran CL90. The noob shouldn’t be allowed to stake claim to the vet’s land until they’ve had a run at it.
I would propose move everyone to a clean server, then stage the land rushes. Starting with CL90’s, then going to like CL75-89, 50-75, then 1-49. Do it over a three day process. Give each group a 24hr window to make a land claim. Then open it up to a free for all.
If this wouldn’t seem viable, then instituting a flag system would work. Say a CL5 puts their flag in one place, but a CL10 wants it. Let them have the option to override ONE TIME someone else’s claim as long as they are a lower CL. This way, everyone gets to choose a new plot, but at the same time gives vet’s an opportunity to get where they were, or what they want.
