Riding the Maelstrom
Soooo … what happens when you ask Michael at the very last minute if he’s interested in participating in a podcast? Apparently, you get him a little bit less focused and filtered than he likes to be in public. You can hear my … slightly strange and ranty … performance from this past Friday over on the Maelstrom podcast. Episode 18, specifically.
This was basically a round-table episode, where we each brought a topic to the table and did a go-round to get everyone’s read on it. Subjects include:
- the lasting impact of Vanguard
- the ripples across the industry of blogs and communities growing in cachet
- the lack of subscription options in AAA games (my topic)
- the balance of PvP vs. PvE
- the lack of non-PC MMOGs
- and the really crappy track record games have for hitting launch dates
You also get the ‘pleasure’ of hearing my anger and loathing about the Shadowrun FPS.

Holy crap, does that screenshot bring back memories. Good times…
The SNES Shadowrun was the superior game for the IP, though the Matrix in the Genesis version of the title was much, much better overall.
I remembered raging fairly hard against Shadowrun last year (see also, “Shadowrun…now with 95% less Shadowrunning”), and had a bit of a bittersweet phase of shadenfreude when I heard that FASA Interactive finally went under not too long ago.
My greatest fear is that we’ll never see another good Shadowrun game. Likely as not, the relatively failure of the Shadowrun FPS (a game few, if any, Shadowrun fans even wanted), Microsoft may very well lay a share of the blame on the IP.
