"The census gets its data from a plugin, meaning that the information is from a self-selecting group. Only the folks who deigned to get the plugin were counted."

The addon also records people from /who and guild lists, and people physically seen in-game by those with the addon. If enough people use it on your realm, the only people it should miss are unguilded people who never venture out of places that aren't visited or /who'd often.

Weak methodology used for race/class combos - using percentages, especially with the popularity skew you mention, is deceiving. There is raw data on race/class combinations in the census, far more reliable. Top eight combos based on number of people playing them are:

1. Nelf druid (333,830)
2. Nelf hunter (301,828)
3. Belf paladin (284,937)
4. Tauren druid (254,323)
5. Human paladin (236,311)
6. Draenei shaman (231,937)
7. Human mage (190,772)
8. Human Warlock (187,110)

Six of the nine classes are represented in the top eight. I think that is pretty good. In your post you have an underlying assumption that somehow a more equitable distribution of races/classes is desirable - why? I'm more interested in you making a case for why that is important.

I also think that if you want to increase the number of people playing a race, making the toons look "prettier" will have far more impact that twiddling with classes.

Agreed with Sehcular.

My first toon was a NElf Priest...*sigh*

If there ever was a more useless racial than "Starshards", I'd like to know what it is.

Before patch 2.x you'd have to have been crazy NOT to go with a Dwarf if you rolled an Alliance Priest. Fear Ward and Desperate Prayer!

"people don’t make characters based on stastics, they make them based on gut feelings."

- Prehaps when first entering the game, however when the mechanics become clear to most players I know, thay re roll and a huge part of the character selection is based on the racal bonus's for PVP and PVE. I think you would find a drematic rise in the amount of troll Priest's if thay had 'Will of the Forsaken' for example.

Cool analysis, I'd love to see gender added to this. I'd be interested to see it broken down even more.

Mmm...numbers...

All shows how out of touch I was then:

First Character; Gnome Warlock
Main; Troll Warrior

This was before Draenai and Blood Elves existed, mind you, although I'm not sure that would have changed my mind.

I'd love to see numbers like this for Guild Wars - Primary Professions at least. I suspect I have a natural gift for picking the least popular race/class in every game I try.
