Random WAR Thoughts

- I hate the way the client launches. Want to know one of the real unsung good decisions about World of Warcraft? You launch the client, it prompts you for your password. Then it shows you your characters, and you jump into the game. That’s it. No splash screens, no delays, no having to agree to the TOS every time. You only re-agree when there’s a big patch. WAR’s EA/Mythic/Game Logo splashes are incredibly annoying. I sign in on the launcher, I’m really to go. I want my characters and the head smashing. I don’t care who made the game.
- The WAR designers have a pretty interesting sense of humor. Have you noticed what one of the very early-level mushroom spores is called?
Blotchy Smedleycap Spore
Level Required: 2
Description: Cultivation – Spore
Grows into a meager fungus.
Skill Cultivation 25
- Speaking of ’sense of humor’, the latest edition of TTH’s “Loading …” article series has a few ‘things to prep yourself for’ when WAR launches. One of them is:
Players don’t form lines. You’ve formed a group, invited everyone that you can see to join you to get Mob123 when he spawns, but before you can attack him a single player, who refused to group, ninjas the mob. You’ll be upset, but get over it because it is going to happen again and again. If India or China ever take over the world, this is how things are going to be. Consider it a primer.
“Consider it a primer …”? What kind of racist bullshit is that? What does that have to do with anything? Sorry, I’m pretty used to people being thoughtlessly stupid at every turn, but what does that even mean?

It is a badly worded statement for sure. I think they may be referring to in Asian games there is a tendency to have massive grind fests where everyone is sitting camping a mob waiting for it to spawn (my friends who played FFXI said this was the case). Still badly worded and borderline racist, although possibly unintentional.
The weird thing is that Mythic’s DAoC has the best login client ever, including a to-die-for option to launch a little local window that you put your server choice, character choice, and password into and it goes and launches the game, logs you in, gets the requested character, and the next thing that happens is you’re in your char in the game. No splash screens, no server or character selection, just you saying, ‘Hi, I really am this player, gimme this character of mine.’ Great, great client. I really hope Mythic gets around to polishing WAR’s login to the same standard.
That said, I suspect that it won’t happen because EA thinks that logo splashes are critically important becaue they work well on the mouth-breathing frat boys that constitute the major market for their console sports games, and EA seems totally unable to grasp that PC MMO gamers are a fairly different market segment than that group of troglodytes.
Wow, they said that in TTH? I agree with you, way way way out of line.
If you’re wondering what kind of racist bullshit it is, you clearly know exactly what it means. Why the feigned confusion?
I’m not feigning confusion about the intended message. I’m confused about the intent behind the words; is he attempting to be funny? Is that just where gamer culture is now, that pointless jabs at other cultures is the humor of choice?
Regardless, it has no place on a game news site.
Certainly not an an unintentional slight on the part of the author who is no doubt referring, at least in the case of India, to the cultural stereotype of Indians not being able to stand in line in an orderly manner and wait their turn. No doubt the author had some axe to grind there. I’m sure there is some racist forum he could take that to and feel all warm and cozy.
I agree on the DAoC launcher, very streamlilned and easy to use. I think they’ll get to it eventually.
Hmmm, I thought he was referring to Ninja’s traditionally being from the Far East ????
Not nec’rly “Ninja-Looters” being Asian.
