		<title>The Year in MMOs Already Shaping Up</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It looks like we have a sense now of what the year is going to look like for MMO gamers. <a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/02/12/free-realms-confirmed-for-april-launch/">Free Realms is dropping later this spring</a>, with what sounds like <a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/02/20/jumpgate-evolution-to-launch-in-june/">a twofer following in June</a>. Champions and Jumpgate letting loose at the start of the summer is sure to give younger MMO gamers with some downtime plenty to do. Then capping off the year we&#8217;ll be seeing <a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/02/19/aions-release-date-expected-for-fall-2009/">Aion on this side of the world</a>. That&#8217;s about all the MMOs I expected to see release this year, with a pretty good spread. You have to sort of worry about two games hitting live service in the same month.</p>
<p>That said, it&#8217;s questionable how much overlap the JGE and Champs audiences will have. And, as Massively points out, Eurogamer&#8217;s announcement of Champions&#8217; release date hasn&#8217;t been confirmed by Cryptic yet.</p>
<p>Just in case you need some background:</p>
<p>Free Realms: SOE&#8217;s first free-to-play title, a whimsical fantasy game aimed at tweens and families.<br />
Champions Online: Cryptic&#8217;s second go at a superhero MMO, based on the tabletop RPG license. Will build on City of Heroes innovations and feature more physicality in the world.<br />
Jumpgate Evolution: Netdevil&#8217;s long-in-development space shooter, a persistent online successor to games like Wing Commander.<br />
Aion: A fantasy game from NCsoft featuring a unique background story and playable characters with the ability to fly.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d say it&#8217;s a busy year for MMOs, but the genre&#8217;s become something altogether different in the last few years. I expect most years we&#8217;re going to be looking at a number of big-picture releases, along with numerous smaller entries into the field. These AAA titles are going to be joined in 2009 by numerous free-to-play games and indie offerings; already this year we&#8217;re seeing the relaunch of Three Rings&#8217; Bang! Howdy.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s awesome, and highly encouraging, to see the genre explode like this. I can&#8217;t wait to see what the industry looks like at the end of the year (thought I&#8217;m pumped that Free Realms is going live so soon!)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A while back Steve Danuser put up a post <a href="http://www.mobhunter.com/?p=398">weighing in on the fate of Tabula Rasa</a>. His was but one of many, with <a href="http://www.brokentoys.org/2009/01/16/perspectives/">Scott</a>, <a href="http://www.zenofdesign.com/2009/01/25/niche/">Damion</a>, <a href="http://www.eldergame.com/2009/01/19/hope-is-not-a-strategy/">Eric</a>, and <a href="http://t-machine.org/index.php/2009/01/16/we-need-to-talk-about-tabula-rasa-when-will-we-talk-about-tabula-rasa/">Adam</a> all putting in their two cents as well. I can’t hope to add anything to this discussion that hasn’t already been mulled by these guys, but I do want to clarify something that Steve links into. He says, <em>“So if these guys are so smart, and if making a AAA epic fantasy MMO is a solved problem, then why did so many games have a rough year in 2008?” </em></p>
<p>“Making a AAA fantasy game is a solved problem” is something <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21613">I said in my 2008 MMO wrapup on Gamasutra</a>, and it’s something I’ve said frequently in the past. And I mean it. AAA fantasy games are ‘solved’, the formulae is complete, development and iteration on that particular niche of the niche market can stop now.</p>
<p>I never said anything about making one being easy.</p>
<p><span id="more-1673"></span>In fact, I’d probably be one of the last guys on the face of the planet to tell you anything associated with making an MMO is easy. I’ve never helped make one, I’m not a designer, but I definitely have had a lot of opportunities to see how challenging, strenuous, and sometimes soul-crushing it is to hew one of these beasts from the raw energies of human creativity.</p>
<p>When I said AAA fantasy games are a ‘solved’ problem, I mean purely from the design point of view. World of Warcraft is a niche fantasy title with simply enormous appeal. The mix of PvE, PvP, dungeons, instances, etc. etc is … if not perfect, then good enough for government work. At this particular place and time, I simply don’t see the market need for another huge-budgeted fantasy MMO. That niche is ‘filled’, and any new products trying to break into that niche will have an almost-impossible obstacle to overcome.</p>
<p>The problem with my outlook here, which you’ve probably already spotted, is that timeframes when you’re talking MMOs is always problematic. When the average MMO can take 3+ years to make, you’ve always got to be looking out ahead of where the market is right now. The games in development right now were probably kicked off after about two years of WoW; think about the huge difference in World of Warcraft’s design between 2006 and 2009. That’s a lot of supposition to make. And some suppositions from that timeframe haven’t paid off.</p>
<p>Warhammer and Conan were both made looking “beyond WoW”, with the hope and assumption that World of Warcraft players would want something kind of like what they’d already played, “but different”. Despite what their PR may have been, both of those titles were direct runs at WoW’s niche, and they both failed to achieve their goals as set out by the developers.</p>
<p>That said, I believe WAR is in a good position to grow based on the team’s extraordinary skill, dedication, and the very strong IP the game is rooted into. I worry about Conan. A lot.</p>
<p>All of this is the basis for my statement that AAA Fantasy games are ‘solved’, and simply reinforces my opinion that MMO developers should be seeking out a new niche in the market. Superhero MMOs are already on the move, with three different games vying for the position as pre-eminent title. That level of competition (something fantasy MMOs have had all along) is something I think will be extremely healthy for that genre.</p>
<p>Sci-fi has suffered mightily since the genre blossomed, but we’re now seeing a bunch of titles on the horizon that look like they’ll finally give that respectable storytelling milieu its due. The Old Republic is the obvious one, of course, but everything from Jumpgate Evolution to Star Trek Online has a chance to offer up that ‘perfect fit’. There are quite a few ‘real world’ MMOs in the works as well, and the free-to-play space is carving out niches AAA players didn’t even think about a few years back. A penguin MMO, a cartoon MMO, puzzle MMOs … it’s a cornucopia of goodness.</p>
<p>This, all this stuff above, is healthy. What SOE is doing (Free Realms, Agency, DCUO), what Cryptic is doing (Champions, Star Trek), is healthy. Even NCsoft (bless em’) made Tabula Rasa with the expectation that moving away from AAA fantasy was the right thing to do.</p>
<p>If you’re currently making a AAA fantasy MMO right now, my apologies if I’m offending you. Perhaps your game will be the one that gives that innovative twist on the MMO platform, pulls the rug out from under WoW, and ushers in a new era of multi-mmo supremacy.</p>
<p>Were I a betting man, though, I’d pass on that wager. World of Warcraft isn’t a game anymore. It’s a hobby, it’s a genre unto itself, it’s a culture … it’s an institution. And (at least in the short term) the house always wins.</p>

<p>So. Not a good start here. Fail. But I will point out that I wasn&#8217;t alone in thinking this would be the case. Plus, I&#8217;m really glad it did come out. Good stuff, and nice job Blizz.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>The concept of RMT and microtransactions will continue to gain acceptance with North American gamers. This will be reflected commercially by further successes for MapleStory and Nexon’s other games in the US.</em></p></blockquote>

<p>Big pass. <a href="http://www.massively.com/2008/09/22/agdc08-why-free-to-play-doesnt-mean-free-or-easy-money/">Nexon was big business this year</a>, and MT made big inroads with a bunch of different games already out.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Other companies will begin to consider alternatives to the flat subscription fee, even if outright RMT/microtransactions aren’t yet on the table. At least one newly announced game this year will feature a non-subscription schema.</em></p></blockquote>
<p><em></em></p>
<p>I&#8217;m going to say this is like a double-pass. If that&#8217;s possible. SOE&#8217;s Station Cash service is a big &#8216;alternative to the fat subscription fee&#8217;, as is NCsoft&#8217;s adoption of its own cash system and City of Heroes Boosters. SWTOR&#8217;s non-subscription schema definitely counts for that last point.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>The Agency is going to go over like gangbusters &#8230; FreeRealms, on the other hand, is going to have a rough go of it.</em></p></blockquote>

<p>I&#8217;m going to call this a fail. Obviously Agency didn&#8217;t come out this year, and Free Realms looks better and better every time I see it. Just the same, I think SOE still has its work cut out for it making gamers and non-gamers understand what these titles are &#8216;about&#8217;.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m going to call this a pass. Obviously my hopes for Warhammer haven&#8217;t gone quite as far as I would have liked, but I think I was pretty close there. And my sense that Conan wouldn&#8217;t do as well as Warhammer has, I think, borne out.</p>

<p>Aherm. Fail. That said, the more I think about the possibilities of CCP&#8217;s experience with a one-world/one-server game applied to a non-space game the more excited I get. I&#8217;d really like to see what a game with avatars in a one-server space would look like.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>One of the newbie studios (Carbine, Red 5) is going to announce a project that will really excite and surprise Massive fans. 38 Studios will announce what they’re doing, and it won’t surprise anyone … but it will be somewhat interesting.</em></p></blockquote>

<p>Fail. But, again, we have big and tantalizing hints about what&#8217;s coming down the pipe from these companies. Big things on the horizon.</p>

<p>WAR was slated for early 08 and got pushed back, so ding there. There were a number of games loosely slated for 08 that have slid to 09, so I&#8217;m going to call this a total success.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>At some point, Vanguard players are going to get tired of waiting around for ‘the good’ to show up in their game. Expect to see some of Vanguard’s best features showing up in EverQuest 2. </em></p></blockquote>

<p>I&#8217;m going to give myself a half-point for this. I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s been a mass exodus from Vanguard or anything, but I&#8217;m told by Karen that my point about features migrating to EQ2 was pretty spot on.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>We’re going to see another live game close up shop this year, and an in-development title will slip into the unseen depths as well.</em></p></blockquote>

<p>Well. Shit. Right on both. TR is closing up, Hellgate slid beneath the waves, and Mythos (among others) went the way of the dodo. Pass.</p>

As I&#8217;ve <a href=" http://www.mmognation.com/2006/12/23/what-i-want-for-christmas/">put out for the last two years</a>, here is what I want to see under the MMO industry tree figuratively for the next twelve months. Come on, MMO industry: gimme some pretty packages!</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what I want for my 2009 year in MMOs:</p>
<ul>
<li>Mega-quantities of awesome from SOE. Agency, Free Realms, and DC Universe Online are all very near the top of my awesomedar. I am really looking forward to the Free Realms Beta, and my hope is that Agency will go into Beta at some point near the end of the year. I don&#8217;t imagine we&#8217;ll be seeing much of DCUO publicly, but at least one more chance to play that kickass demo would be much appreciated.</li>
<li>An ongoing stream of content from BioWare about <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic">The Old Republic</a>. Not only am I personally really thrilled that we&#8217;re finally getting something, professionally I can&#8217;t get enough of that SWTOR.</li>
<li>The lads at 38 have told us that <a href="http://www.massively.com/2008/07/30/comic-con-08-38-studios-interview-reveals-ip-announcement-next/">we should see real news on Copernicus sometime in early summer</a>. I want their kickoff to be a huge splash, their content to be incredibly well-received, and their design to be absolutely inspired. I&#8217;ll be straight: I think they&#8217;ve got a long haul ahead of them. The fantasy genre is going to be hell and a half to enter as a direct competitor to WoW. But if they want to give it a try, who am I to stand in their way or do anything but cheerlead from the sidelines?</li>
<li>After one of my <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19796">favorite interviews of the year with two gents from Red 5</a>, I have been obsessed about getting more details on their game. I would absolutely love to know what the hell they&#8217;re doing down there. More than any other &#8216;dark&#8217; company right now, Red 5 is making the game that I&#8217;m desperate to explore. Here&#8217;s hoping they give us a bit more insight on their plans thiscoming year.</li>
<li>I&#8217;m greedy, I know, but <a href="http://www.mmognation.com/2007/08/13/face-the-nation-mike-obrien-and-jeff-strain/">I really want a look at Guild Wars 2</a> as well. It&#8217;s been more than a year <a href="http://www.mmognation.com/2007/08/14/arenanet-wrapup/">since Arena.net put out Eye of the North</a>, and GW2 was well along in development back in that point. While I completely understand why it&#8217;s not out yet, the tomb-like silence that we&#8217;ve seen from the company on the topic of their sequel to their groundbreaking title has been a bit unnerving. I really hope Arena will finally be able to throw back the curtain and give us a look at the goods.</li>
<li>Tons of success to my fellow MMO bloggers and podcasters, be they industry paragons like <a href="http://www.brokentoys.org/">Scott</a> or enthusiast juggernauts like Tim (<a href="http://blogs.chimpswithkeyboards.com/vanhemlock/">Van Hemlock</a>). While I know I don&#8217;t contribute a lot from this domain much any more, I&#8217;d like to think that the MMOblogosphere is a pretty darn special place to be hanging your hat. Here&#8217;s hoping it continues in 2009.</li>
<li>Continued good gaming vibes and personal connections between myself and my guilds! A year ago I was a boring-as-hell soloer, and now I have a community in all three of my primary MMOs! I hope that 2009 finds me growing even closer to the <a href="http://my.lotro.com/kinship-nimrodel-podcasters_of_bree/">Podcasters of Bree</a>, <a href="http://eq2players.station.sony.com/guilds/guild_profile.vm?guildId=2214101">Revelry and Honor</a>, and What Would Thrall Do.</li>
<li> The will, intelligence, writing skill, and patience required to run Massively.com. I&#8217;ll be honest, a year ago I never in a million years would have imagined I&#8217;d be running an MMO news site. It&#8217;s exactly, precisely what I&#8217;ve been working towards for the last few years and I feel incredibly lucky to be here. It&#8217;s hard, it&#8217;s challenging, it&#8217;s stressful, and to be honest it doesn&#8217;t pay that well. But it&#8217;s Massively, and I&#8217;ve got lots and lots of love.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Seeing Free Realms at E3 reminded me of something I&#8217;ve been mulling for a little bit. In the same way that I think <a href="http://www.mmognation.com/2008/05/07/why-guilds-need-new-blood-to-live/">guilds are simply not visible enough</a> &#8211; too ephemeral &#8211; the primary content of MMOs can often be obscured for various reasons. Time is the one that I hear a lot of friends talking about. When Brent put down his Hunter from our Monday night WoW group, he deleted all the quests in his log. To come back fresh, he said. This is a pretty common problem, I think: coming back to a character after a lengthy absence can result in confusion &#8211; even bad decisions.</p>
<p>To combat this confusion, Free Realms has a unique display that appears when a player logs in. Here&#8217;s <a href="http://www.massively.com/2008/07/19/e308-an-overview-of-free-realms/">a clip from Massively&#8217;s writeup</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;When you launch the game, you start at a welcome screen which gives you information about what&#8217;s new in the game that you could be doing right now. It includes a bit of the Facebook kind of information from your profile page with your friends mini-feed, but it also has quests that you&#8217;re working on, new mini-games that you can click on and go directly to, and information about how your pet is doing. When asked how much direction Free Realms would give its players, McWilliams told us, &#8220;We don&#8217;t want you to have to go find your fun. It&#8217;s not fun to wander around and not know what to do.&#8221; The welcome screen will provide players with immediate options of fun things to do, with links to take the player directly there &#8212; with no travel time or stumbling around, not knowing where to go next.&#8221;</em></p></blockquote>

<p>I was actually thinking of something more personal, a sort of attendant NPC. The Moogle in FFXI is probably the closest comparison currently in a game right now. He lives in your player apartment, and provides you various functions likes job switching, storage, etc. An attendant NPC, in my mind, would be able to provide a number of additional services.</p>
<ul>
<li>Questing suggestions: The attendant could point out zones or quest lines that the player isn&#8217;t currently engaged in. Rumors amongst the populace, that sort of thing.</li>
<li>Holiday news: The attendant could ensure that players are aware of holiday opportunities and ongoing world events.</li>
<li>Dungeon delving: Hints and quests that would lead the player to level-appropriate dungeons and instances.</li>
<li>Class-relevant vendoring: Resources or items that are relevant to the player&#8217;s class and level all in one locale.</li>
</ul>
<p>The insidious thing about an attendant like this is that he could provide some sense of &#8216;grounding&#8217; even in a game without housing. If attendants were only available in certain areas of NPC cities, and you had to pick which one was your &#8216;home&#8217;, it would give the player some sense of belonging. Far more meaningful than a &#8216;hearth stone&#8217;  would be a personal NPC who remembers your name and starts to learn a few basic things about you. Maybe comments on equipment upgrades you&#8217;ve had, or compliments you on a recent PvP victory.</p>
